Baby girl goes to 2nd grade

Brianna started 2nd grade today. We chose to send her to a small private Christian school this year instead of home-schooling like the past 2 years. It's the best decision for us but nonetheless still hard for me to walk away from her class room this morning. Missy over at It's Almost Naptime describes it best, I couldn't have said it any better!

As a mother of a little girl that loves hair accessories, I'm constantly losing, or searching for lost hair bows and barrettes. Not any more! I found this empty picture frame for .25 at a thrift store.

Some spray paint, purple polka-dotted ribbon and a hot glue-gun later:

This was so easy to make and will hopefully solve all of our "hair dilemmas"!

Best of all? It only cost $2.50 to make & it will look so nice in the new

"purple princess bedroom" that we are getting ready to decorate!

I'm sure that the few people that read this blog have been wondering where in the world I've gone. Actually nowhere, which is becoming a slight problem as of late. I'll explain.

Our original moving date was August 15th. That day has come & gone & as of today we are still residents of Nebraska. I always like to be prepared so for the last few months have been listing things on Craigslist & scheduling cancellation of phone lines & DSL service. You see where I'm going with this, right? We no longer have a home phone, which isn't a problem at all since we use our cell phones most of the time anyway. It's the interruption of internet service that has caused more than it's fair share of problems. It's not really a huge problem, just an inconvience I suppose. You never really think about how much you rely on something until it's gone. So for the next month or so I won't be updating this blog very often, until we get settled in our new home.
We hope to be moved by October sometime, I certainly hope so since we have sold our bedroom furniture & I'm getting somewhat tired of living out of a suitcase! :-)

One of my Photo-of-the-day shots: Brianna's 1st grade cirruculum came in the mail! She is loving school, for the most part, & is enjoying having her own desk & hot pink desk chair!

This little dog has made life very interesting for us lately. After having a sever seizure this past Sunday morning as we were trying to get to church, she has been taken to the vet & has been diagnosed with epilepsy. She is now on meds for the duration of her lifetime. Never a dull moment around these parts!

Today we toured the Cave of the Winds. I went into it thinking we were going to a few large 'rooms' with stalactites & such. I had no idea that we would be climbing narrow ladders, & going through tunnels so low that even Brianna had to duck! I've never thought of myself as claustrophobic but I was certainly leaning that direction by the time we got out of there! Funny enough, Brianna said the tight tunnels were her favorite part! And yes, Mom, I thought of you while we were in there!

We then drove about 45 miles SW to Cripple Creek, CO. We really wanted to take Tyler on the train ride there, although it wasn't as long as we originally thought, he loved it of course. The town was rich in history & back in the day, just plain rich! The mines surrounding the area produced 15-20 million dollars back in the Gold Rush days.

We also made a quick stop at Focus on the Family headquarters. The basement houses Whit's End & several playgrounds. The decor there was beautiful, they really put a lot of work into it, complete with the fountain soda shop!

Colorado- Day 1

The first stop was Pike's Peak. Even though Tim & I have both been there we decided to drive it again, because, I don't know, isn't that what you're supposed to do in Colorado Springs? :-) The temperature dropped from 70 degrees at the bottom to 40 degrees at the very top of the Peak, and of course I forgot to pack any jackets, so we wrapped the kids up in their blankets & made a very quick tour! A word of advice: The World Famous Doughnuts made at the top? They might be famous but they're not any good, so save your money! The fudge, on the other hand, was totally worth the splurge!

This might just be my favorite picture of Brianna from the trip. It's crazy, & it's her! She was tired of me taking her picture & did this pose, of course I kept snapping & I'm so glad I did! The 'flattened penny machine'. Sometime ago Brianna found my collection of them when I was a kid & she fell in love. Since then she has decided that she want to collect them too & has had so much fun making them on this trip.See? Absolutely delighted!

We also made the drive that night to go see Tim Hawkins, a christian comedian. It was a quite a bit out of our way, on the other side of Denver, but we're so glad we went. He was great & so funny.

Vacation Time!
Brianna is exactly thrilled when the word 'vacation' gets brought up around our house. To her it means going on a trip & watching movies, a hotel pool, & probably some sort of an amusement park thrown in somewhere, she is a definite thrill-seeker! To Tyler, vacation just mostly means endless Tom & Jerry DVDs & M&Ms for breakfast, He is pretty easy to please!

To Tim & I, well I think we mostly just love the time away. Away from work, laundry, cleaning & packing. And lets not forget the cooking! I love my kitchen but a break is so nice.

This year we've decided to stick a little closer to home & go to Colorado. The fact that it's so close & we've never been is ironic, especially since we'll be moving very shortly. The time that we have left in NE has found us scrambling to 'catch up' on all the places that we must see before moving!

Everyday Dancing

We dance a lot in our little yellow house. That is, the kids do! Whether it be to the tunes of Veggie Tales or a book that has a music button on it, they dance. They love music. I have discovered there is no quicker way to settle them down in the car than to turn on some kids music. Ahhh, quietness! :-)

This particular day Tyler wanted to dance with 'Sissy', who had to be convinced that it was a good idea. After much pleading she conceded to dancing with her 'Prince'. (Who by the way, I'm thinking needs a more 'manly costume")! They have fun and I suppose thats all that matters!

Catching up

Summertime activites, moving, & everyday life has somehow managed to make it very difficult to keep up with this blog! However, I will try to update every now and then as I'm able. I'm drawing a blank as how to even start this post so I'm going with just bullet points for now!

* We have not found a buyer for our house. I imagine this market is not making it easy for anyone these days, certainly not us. We do have somone who wants to rent, with the possibility of buying later. We will probably go ahead with this option instead of having the house stand empty.

* Summer is flying by! I cannot believe it is basically the end of July already, time to think about starting school again. We are going to be home-schooling this year again, as we just won't be moved in time for Brianna to start school at the Christian Academy in town.

* I have found out that a 2 1/2 yr. old child CAN live on basically bread alone! With a few extra milk products thrown in. Such as yogurt, string cheese, and the occasionally poptart!

* Last night ended our little hometown County Fair. We enjoyed it immensensly this year, especially knowing that this was our last year. The kids are the perfect age to enjoy all the rides and seeing all the animals. And of course, lets not forget the food! I do believe that we all need to go on a diet of carrotsticks and grilled chicken after all the nachos and funnel cakes that we've consumed!

Our little yellow house, the one we have so lovingly remodeled, and put so much time into - is for sale. I'm sad, mostly because I love this house! It fits our family perfectly and we have loved putting our own personal stamp on it. But it seems as thought God has other plans for us right now. And those plans do not include Nebraska.

We have made the decision to move to North Carolina this summer. Tim will continue working with the same company, it's essentially just a job transfer. He will hold the same position as he does currently, along with several other plant managers, since the new plant is much larger.

We are happy with our decision, although at times it's hard to think about uprooting the family and starting all over again. We are looking for a house to rent, thankfully we have a great Realtor in NC, who is working really hard to find us a great place to live.

I'm happy that we'll be a lot closer to both of our families, at least within driving distance. And when Brianna heard that Disney World was only a 6 hr. drive she was really excited! I am so thankful that Brianna is so easy-going, she's taken the news in stride and hasn't seemed upset at all. That is, until she saw last year's snow boots in the "to-sell-box". When she asked why they were in there & my response was that we won't be needing them in NC, the water-works started! She then informed me, (between sobs) that snow is her favorite season! And she's right, she is one tough little girl, as long as she's bundled up & warm, she will stay out in the winter cold for hours! So, even though I utterly despise the cold & snow, I have a feeling this Mama might just be praying for a few snow flakes to fall in our neighborhood this winter!

And the 1st thing on the schedule after we get settled in?
I'm thinking that a subscription to Southern Living is totally in order!

I know I'll miss his messes when he's all grown up. . .

It's no secret that our girl loves her some birthdays. Since we had to be away on her actual birthday we planned a party for the weekend after. She was thrilled, happy to play with all of her friends, & had a great time. The pinata was a hit,(literally!) & there was more than enough candy to go around. All in all, a successful party, everyone had fun.

Its nice at times. We all know that our families love us, but it's still nice to hear. We know that our spouses are thankful for the "magic" drawer that is always full of clean clothes, for the hot suppers that (most of the time) are on the table after a day at work, & for the floor that vacuums itself, ( I wish) multiple times a day. We know our hard work is appreciated, but little notes like this: from a sweet daughter, makes life so much more enjoyable!

These are a little late, she actually turned 6 two days ago but since we were out of town this past weekend we will celebrate this weekend with a party for the birthday girl. She was so excited about turning six, not necessarily about the number itself, just that it was her birthday! This girl is all about birthdays, it doesn't really matter whose it is. Of course the fact that she got to open presents made it all the better! Here's hoping this next year brings just as much happiness and fun as this past year has! We love you, Brianna!

I knew it would happen one of these days. I just wasn't prepared for it to happen so soon. I kinda brought it upon myself. One day as we were heading out the door to church, I very innocently asked my little girl if she wanted a quick spritz of perfume. She was a little hesitant at first but finally agreed. And now? She is hooked. I'm not sure how many 'spritzes' she uses, but occasionally she will walk past me during the day & a 'wave' of perfume rushes by as she goes on her way. Yes, her face may be smudged with dirt from playing outside & her flip-flop wearing toes might be incredibly grungy,
but by all that is right & good, she smells good!

How is it that my baby girl has already finished Kindergarten? How have the past 5, almost 6 years just totally flown by? How is it that she will turn 6 years old in just 2 weeks? As much as I have enjoyed her babyhood and now her childhood, I am enjoying seeing her grow. I have loved teaching her to read & am so happy when she voluntarily sits down with a book to read it herself. I am trying to convince her that cooking and baking is fun, although I seem to have my work cute out for me, she'd much rather just eat the results of my work, thats ok, I have plenty of time! Just this morning she asked me, "Mom, did you know that tadpoles grow up to be frogs?" When I answered that yes, I knew that, she replied, "Wow, you know everything!" Just keep thinking that, Brianna, and we'll be just fine!

Brianna has been coming up with the funniest thing lately. So for my sake, and the Grandparents', I thought I'd write a few things down.

- Last week we were taking a walk & I was pushing Tyler in the stroller while she walked beside me. Tyler loves me to give the stroller a good, hard push, & then run to catch up with him. Well, one particular time I gave the push & he headed into the curb. Brianna hollered, "Quick, Mama, get your brother!" The mother-son relationship is still a little fuzzy in this household!

- It was snack time & Brianna was eating some grapes sitting on the living room floor. All of a sudden, she looks up and asks, "Can I sit on this grape?" I'm ever so glad that she gave me the opportunity to say no, since I'm not overly fond of scraping food off of our hardwood floors. She's considerate, if nothing else!

- We finished up with Kindergarten last week & instead of a party we asked her if she would like to take a little weekend trip to the zoo and Children's Museum. (We live 3 hrs. away from these places so it ends up taking an entire weekend to fit everything in.) She loves the museum so that was a definite yes, & the Zoo sounded good too. Then she asked if we would be staying at a Hotel. I told her yes & that I would try to find one with a pool so the kids could go swimming. The word 'pool' just sends her into total excitement. So, ever since then, she has been telling people, "We're going to a pool with a Hotel!" I'm sure the goggles will come in handy, everyone in Hobby Lobby thought they were great, since she INSISTED on wearing them the whole time!

Ok, so I know I'm really just an average Mom of 2 kids. I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful husband with a great job that provides for us so that I don't have to get a job. I have made the choice to home school my children. I get that I'm not the norm anymore. But I still feel like I've grown 3 horns and sprouted wings when people find out that I home school. I either get the, "Oh, you must be really smart!", or the look. Which says, "She looks normal, but must be weird." None of this really matters or certainly doesn't change my decisions, but I do find myself slightly understanding what this video is about! I'll admit it, it's funny. Even though I don't plan on having 10 children or driving a big van, I 'm guessing there will always be a stigma attached to homeschooling. And thats ok.

for the awesome privilege of being a mother to these precious little people! Amidst all the playing, homeschooling, cleaning, cooking, and sometimes chaos in this little yellow house of ours, I thank God that He has entrusted their lives to my care. There is not a day that goes by that I don't, at some point in the day, stop & just watch the kids. I like to catch them when they're playing or otherwise occupied by themselves, they are growing up so fast that I want to remember all the stages! This may or may not have anything to do with the fact that I've taken just over 900 photos in the last 3 weeks!

The last 2 years we have been able to visit my parents on Mother's Day, I really missed being able to be with my Mom today. Tim & I are both so thankful for the Godly examples that our Mother's have been throughout our lives, WE LOVE YOU BOTH!

This one was a little premature, I'm afraid. One that brought on many tears. Tim was taking the kids for a ride on the 4-wheeler & Brianna somehow bumped her mouth on the handle bars. Ouch! That 'bump' knocked the tooth loose and then it fell out 2 days later. All together - total tooth loss count is up to 5 already!

We have been having absolutely beautiful weather here in Nebraska. This morning was no exception, around 10:30am I shooed my children and the little boy I babysit, outside to play! I was just putting my shoes on to go outside to watch them when my neighbor rings my doorbell. She keeps to herself mostly and keeps her property very well kept, but to say that she is pushy and bossy would be quite the understatement. She proceeds to tell me that she is having concrete poured around her footer in hopes of stopping the basement leaking. Ok, seems like a good idea.

She tells me that the construction guys will be running the equipment on our property to dig out around her house. She literally only has 3 ft. of property outside her bedroom window, and then RIGHT THERE is our property line. I have no idea why someone would want to build a house so close to the property line, but oh well. I initially gave her permission to do this and then looked at the equipment and saw that it was a skid-steer. Which, essentially, SKIDS on the grass, tearing it up as it goes! For that reason, & for other reasons that shall remain nameless at this time, Tim & I decided that we would rather keep our yard intact. So, back I go to see if there is another way to go about this WITHOUT tearing a portion of our yard up.

Then, she drops the bomb. You see, last summer she had her son-in-law put up a fence. It's a nice, white, picket fence. The only thing is that is 1 ft. on our property. Tim and I both decided to let it slide, rather than cause problems. And we have, until now. Until today when she brings up the fact that the fence is on the property line. Me: "I'm sorry, ma'am, but it's a foot on our side of the property marker, don't you think you should've asked permission before installing a fence on our property?" She replies with, "Oh, I didn't put it up, my Son-in-law did!" Really? Are you serious? I'll have to admit, she caught me off guard there, for a moment I felt like I was reasoning with my 5 yr.old, not my 80 yr. old neighbor. I decided to let it slide as I just don't enjoy arguing, but found myself walking home, just shaking my head! As a friend would say, "People, People, People!"

Oh, yeah. What are the guys using instead of the skid steer? Shovels! They are digging most of it by hand. Now, guess who looks like the bad guy? It's so nice. *Sigh*

I thought I'd share a couple recipes that I've discovered and we've enjoyed recently.

First off is Four Cheese Chicken Fettuccine - this dish ends up coming out of the oven tasting like something you would order from Olive Garden. It's very rich, but oh-so-good!

The second recipe is one that I've been searching for, for a very long time. I like to cook from scratch, not that I don't use box mixes from time to time, I just prefer to be in charge of the quality of ingredients. I've tried numerous recipes for pancakes and have never had any turn out like these do. It's pretty ironic that the name of the recipe is Perfect Pancakes. I like that, very simple and straightforward! They do indeed, turn out like those photos you've seen. The perfectly stacked fluffy pancakes with the syrup running down the side? Yeah, those!

1 1/2 cups flour
3 Tbsp. sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground allspice
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil

In lg. bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt & allspice. Separate eggs, & whisk egg yolks in small bowl with milk & oil. With an electric mixer, beat egg whites to stiff peaks. Stir milk mixture into flour mixture just until combined. Do not overmix! Fold in egg whites until no white streaks remain.
Makes: 16 4-inch pancakes

Monday night musings

Today was one of those days; when even the ordinary seemed to stand out, along with the not-so-ordinary.

Observation #1. Purchasing a really cool outside toy for the kids somehow does not receive near as much attention as the 'really cool boxes that it came in.' I'm thinking I could round up some large boxes and wrap them up for Christmas. I'd save money, participate in recycling, and have very happy kids!

Exhibit A: Notice the basketball/soccer/football/baseball/hockey combo playset off to the side, hmmmmm. . . .

Observation #2. Trying to disguise the smell of a really bad dirty diaper by lighting Yankee Candle's 'Cafe au Lait' does not really work. In fact, it results in everyone that goes upstairs saying, "Ewww, whats that weird smell?" haha

Observation #3. I certainly would have never imagined that Brianna would suddenly decide that tonight is the night that the training wheels must come off! I must have been a sight, I was videoing the grand event and taking photos at the same time. Earlier this afternoon Tyler also figured out how to pedal his little tricycle, something tells me that our evening walks have just gotten a lot more exciting!

While the Cat is showering, the mice will play! Brianna is fascinated with eggs. Scrambled for breakfast, plastic Easter eggs, or, unfortunately, real farm-fresh eggs. She loves to incorporate them into her regular imaginative play. Thankfully, this sort of thing does not happen very often at our house. The kids had just seen me place the just-delivered eggs into the fridge and then head to the shower. Dropping the eggs was clearly not part of the plan as Brianna started apologizing as soon as it happened and Tyler was aghast at the 'mess', he wanted to start cleaning right away but I managed to convince he to wait until I could handle the situation. I suppose I should be glad that only 1 actually broke, that's quite amazing really! All in a SAHM's work day, I suppose!

Even though I most certainly did my part, by making sure my darling newborn daughter always had a bow in her hair, and lets face it, she has often owned more shoes than me, she walks a very fine line. I prefer to think of her as "well-balanced", instead of "tomboy". She can transition faster that you can imagine from princess dress-up to well, . . . take yesterday for example. Everyone was getting ready for church, we were almost ready to walk out the door. Brianna was all dressed up, from the top of her head, (french-braided crown and of course, a bow) to her black dress shoes with a small heel, which she loves, btw. It was then that I discovered that the dog had been sick the night before, and well, there were a couple 'messes' to clean up in the laundry room. Tim was so kind to clean them up but not before our little princess exclaimed, "Oh, Sophie vomited? Wait, don't clean it up yet, let me see!"

Hmmmm, with such a strong stomach, maybe a career in medicine would suit her well!

I don't think this is a good thing . . . .

A Purpose Driven Life

This was emailed to me by my Dad some time ago, & I thought it was worth sharing. It's quite long, but a very good read.

In a recent interview with Rick Warren, author of the 'Purpose Driven Life, Rick said, "People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were not made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in heaven."

One day my heart is going to stop and that will be the end of my body - - - but not the end of me.

I may live 60-100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of years in eternity. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal. god wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity.

We were made by God & for God, & until you figure that out, life isn't going to make sense.

Life is a series of problems: Either you are in one now, you're just coming out of one, or you're getting ready to go into another one.

The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than your comfort.

God is more interested in making your life holy that He is in making your life happy.

We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that's not the goal of life. The goal is to grow in character, in Christ's likeness.

This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer. I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don't believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it's kind of like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life.

No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that need to be worked on. And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for.

You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems.

If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness, 'which is my problem, my issues, my pain.' But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off your self and onto God and others.

We discovered quickly that in spite of the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people, God was not going to heal Kay or make it easy for her . . . it has been very difficult for her, and yet God has strengthened her character, given her a ministry of helping other people, given her a testimony, drawn her closer to Him and to people.

You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad of life.

Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder. For instance, this past year, all of a sudden when the book sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with before. I don't think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or for you to live a life of ease.

So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, notoriety and influence. He gave me 2 different passages that helped me decide what to do, II Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72. First, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases. Second, about midway through last year, I stopped taking a salary from the church. Third, we setup foundations to fund an initiative we call The Peace Plan to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation. Fourth, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able to serve God for free.

We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions? Popularity?

Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God's purposes (for my life)?

When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if I don't get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. God didn't put me on earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He's more interested in what I am than what I do. That's why we're called beings, not human doings.

Happy moments, PRAISE GOD.
Difficult moments, SEEK GOD.
Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD.
Painful moments, TRUST GOD.
Every moment, THANK GOD.

We're going away for a little weekend-getaway to celebrate, a little R&R sounds like just the ticket!
Thanks to Priceline, I scored a room at a nice downtown Hotel, for a very reasonable price. Nothing much on the schedule. If the weather continues to cooperate we might take the kids to the zoo. The only thing that is set in stone is a visit to Outback Steakhouse for the birthday dinner!

I worried. I'll have to admit that when I was pregnant with Tyler, I worried a lot. Not about the pregnancy. I worried how Brianna would react to having another sibling. For 3 1/2 years, she was the center of attention, and now her world was about to be turned upside down by a little baby brother. Turns out, I shouldn't have worried at all. Quite honestly, she didn't even seem to notice that she had a little brother. She didn't seem to have much of an opinion of him at all. There was certainly not any jealousy, for which I was very thankful. But her non-decrypt attitude towards him started me worrying in an entirely different way. Would they ever bond? Would they ever share that special sibling bond?

I snapped these photos of them yesterday in their new "Valentines garb". That sibling bond that I was once worried about? It's not even a thought now! These 2 adore each other and are rarely apart!In fact, as soon as I finished taking the pics of them together, I tried to get some of just Tyler, alone. As you can see, he didn't want to cooperate. This is the only face he could muster up. So, I called Big Sis back into the room to see if she could make him smile,
I think she has special powers!

and this - to my little boys hair, I THINK its time for a hair cut! I don't remember the last time he had a hair cut, it's been that long ago. There is certainly a reason. This happy, smiling, easy-going child is reduced to a sobbing, almost-hysterical mess as soon as he is placed into the chair to begin the cut. So today, when the lady asked me, "Do you want it pretty short?", I said yes. And believe me, she meant what she said. I don't think his hair has ever been shorter, but I'm glad. This means we won't have to visit her again for a loooonnnggg time, and that makes this mama very happy! The "after" pictures will be forthcoming!

We have a Kid's Club of sorts at our church every Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. It's called Awana, there are Bible stories told, Scriptures memorized, games to play and snacks to munch. The kids, ranging in ages from 4 yrs. to 12 yrs. really seem to enjoy this time together to sing and learn about God. I'm responsible for 5 great, rambunctious kids. I must admit, though, that this has been a stretching experience for me. Although I love kids and even do my share of babysitting during the week, I do not feel myself called into Child-Evangelism. Because of this, Tuesdays are often a hurried and stressful day. After saying goodbye to my last daycare child at 4pm, I often feel hurried and rushed to make supper, feed everyone, and get Brianna and I ready to head out the door to Awana. Needless to say, I often do not feel ready to continue to teach children, as I've been doing it all day with the 4 that are in my care.

It was a typical Tuesday a couple weeks ago. I was starting supper and realized that I was missing one key ingredient. I hurriedly put the kids in the car and ran to the grocery store. While in line, the little girl in front of me turned around and I saw that she was a regular at Awana and also in my class. Up to this point, I had been thinking about skipping Awana that night, it had been one of those days! But those thought flew out of my head as soon as she turned, with a huge smile and said, "I have been studying my verses and I'm ready to say them to you tonight!" She is such a good little girl and always does so well, that I just couldn't disappoint her, I was at my class, ready for action that night.

It finally came time for her to say her scripture that she had worked so hard on. She proudly started reciting, "Romance 3:23, For all have sinned and fallen out of shorts of the glory of God. " After trying to conceal my laughter, (I don't know if I was entirely successful!) I realized that a call to Child-Evangelism or not, these kids are in need of guidance and why shouldn't I take an hour-and-a half out of my time to help them? I have my answer.

It's hard to believe that a new year is already here. I'd like to say that all the Christmas Decor is down and put away, the house has received a thorough cleaning, the playroom has been purged of all old and unused toys, and the new toys have found their new homes. But lets be a little more realistic here. The Christmas tree is still up, only 1/2 of the decor is down, and Tim is bringing home some large boxes from work so that we can start the toy-purge!
I think we'll be tossing the artificial tree tonight after we remove all the ornaments and beaded-garland from it. It's not that it's old, I think we've had it for 6 yrs. now. It's just that every year when Tim gets it out of the box to put together, he has to spend several hours replacing burn-out lights. This year I think he worked on it for 5 hours! That just doesn't make much sense to me, so out it goes and next year we'll just get a real tree. It's been years since we've had a real tree, I'm sure that my children think that all Christmas trees come from large boxes from Target. Just like my daughter, when asked where milk comes from, answered, "From the milk jug, of course!" A country girl, she is not! :)

Speaking of the princess herself, look who left a plate of cookies for Santa!

And who exclaimed Christmas morning, "Wow, Santa was really hungry!"

Catch-up time

I know, I know, it's been a while since I've updated! We've been busy living life, what can I say? As for what all we've been up to, I think I'll let the photos pretty much speak for themselves.

A couple weeks ago my parents were able to fly out for a visit. Yes, I said fly. They normally drive as Mom hates to fly but because of time contraints, decided they would be able to spend the most time with us if they took an early flight. We had such a great time with them while they were here.

We enjoyed some great meals, so nice to have extra help in the kitchen!

Grammy brought a gingerbread house to put together, it turned out to be quite a challenge, but it's still standing, that icing is tough stuff!

We flew to NC last week for the Kaufman's Annual Christmas party. In addition to all the meetings that Tim attended, we were able to spend some time with family. Calista's little boy, Magnus, and Tyler really hit it off and had lots of fun playing together. Here they were watching Uncle Ken washing his truck and laughing when he would throw the rag up to the window.

first, a little background. We live in a very small town. I don't know if small is the right word, I think itty, bitty, we-don't-even-have-a stop-light, barely have stop signs, is a better way to describe it. It's very quaint, to say the least. One thing our town does have, however, is a newspaper. It also services 2-3 other even smaller surrounding towns, so all together we seem to manage to have enough things to say to warrant a paper. Well, it must be a slow week at The Times Tribune because I just got a call from them wondering if I had any news to put into the paper! I'll have to admit, it sorta stunned and surprised me, at first I thought it was a joke. When I realized that they were serious I politely told them no, I didn't have any news. You see, once a week when the paper comes out, there is 1/2 a page dedicated to the goings-on of your neighbors. There you will find out who went out for lunch together after church on Sunday, who had relatives visiting and the occasional birth announcement. It must be a really slow week at the paper if they're calling me for news, so sorry to disappoint!

I've fallen way behind in my regular posting, my apologies to my 3 readers! :) This time of year can get quite crazy as I'm sure everyone is feeling right now.

I braved the crowds yesterday at 5:30 am to snag some absolutely great deals. The result is that I am almost completely finished with my Christmas shopping. Just need to pick up a few odds and ends, probably at the last minute! The only problem that I had was when I got to Kohls, which unfortunately for me happens to be my favorite store. Unfortunate, because once I finished shopping and went to check out, I waited in line for 1 hr. to finally get to the cashier! I don't think I would've had the stamina to stand there and wait if it hadn't been for my friend, Raquel, who I was shopping with, and who was waiting right along with the rest of us. The time seems to go by much quicker when you have a friend to chat with, Thanks Raquel! :) So did anyone else get out there for the early-bird specials?

can't decorate my house for the holidays or put up my Christmas tree, that is. I couldn't even change my blog template. I just can't. I was getting tired of my old look so I did change that, but it's still in the fall category! When my brother and I were growing up, we didn't get a tree, (or take it out of the box if we were on the mission field!) until the weekend of Thanksgiving. It's just what I'm used to and I suppose that's what I'll always do for my family also. I did unpack Brianna's little white tree and let her decorate it this past weekend, she had so much fun and it turned out so cute! It's so girly, with pink, purple, turquoise, and lime colored little ornaments all over it. I suppose she'll be using it as a night light in her bedroom for the next several months.

I'm certainly anxious for the holiday season to be here though, I love decorating for Christmas. I think the tree is my favorite part, I love sitting in the living room in the evening with the lights twinkling, it seems so magical.

But for now, the totes of Christmas decor will remain in that dusty, cobweb-filled basement of ours and the pumpkins will remain on the mantel.. Just wait though, come Thanksgiving weekend, watch out! This house will be SCREAMING Christmas spirit! :)

My little man had a burst of boredom the other day while I was on the phone with my mom. Then he discovered some crayons. Need I say more? This is the result . . . actually this is only part of the stairway, the entire wall is now decorated in patches of brown crayon. Ugh, now I need to go buy more paint, I'm thinking I might go a shade darker this time around to hide the little hand prints a bit better. Tyler, lets stick to the coloring books from now on, okay?

Today was Tyler's 2nd birthday, (bracing myself for the 'terrible twos'!) He didn't quite get the Happy birthday thing, even though it was sung to him no less than 200 times by his older sister. He even broke down into tears a few times, I think he just felt very over whelmed. Poor Grandpa and Grammy, all they heard when they called to wish him a happy birthday was total sobbing. He certainly had his moments today but I think he forgot them pretty quickly as soon as he started unwrapping those presents. He loved all his train decorations and cake, even though it wasen't Thomas, it must have resembled a train close enough that he was happy. We relit the candles no less than 5 times, he really loved blowing those things out.

Happy birthday buddy, we love you so much and can't imagine life without our little man!

but I don't. It's been a busy week. Homeschooling, baking, coming out of our candy coma's from Halloween, and scrapbooking. Yes, I actually said scrapbooking. I haven't done it in ages and have decided that at the rate I'm going Brianna will be in high school before I get her Pre-school album done. So, I've designated several days this week to getting that album completely finished. It's going well and pretty fast, as I've decided to keep it really simple so that it will actually look like a Preschooler's album. I'll share some pics when it's finished!

Our Halloween

Halloween is a much-anticipated day in our house. Not in the spooky, ghost and goblin way. We love all the fall decorations, picking pumpkins and carving them, picking out costumes and going trick-or-treating. The small town that we live in makes this all possible and so much fun. Thankfully, once Brianna decided that she was going to be Belle, she stuck with her decision. Tyler loves trains so naturally I thought that Thomas the Train would be a great choice, right?

Not so much. This was in the car, getting ready to trick-or-treat to the businesses in town. He did eventually decide that it would be fun to fill his little bucket with candy, thankfully!

Trick-or-treating in town. From 2:30-3:30pm all the business had candy for the kids, they had a blast walking to all the stores around the square.

'Belle''Thomas'My little princess and IAll the candy that was gathered, WAY too much! :) I plan to dress the kids up again and attempt to take some posed pictures, providing that 'Thomas' will cooperate, I didn't have much of a chance to get pics before going out, they were so excited! Tyler was so exhausted, he was begging to go to bed by the end of the night! Not so much for his sister though, the sugar-high lasted way past her bed-time!

Pretty Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls

I made these last night and they turned out so incredible good that I just had to share the recipe! This is a big batch so I divided them up and shared with our friends, they had a nice Sunday evening surprise! I did need to double the batch of icing, we like generous amounts of the stuff on our sweet rolls, who doesn't? :) This pic was taken before I put the icing on, but you get the idea! The only thing I did differently was instead of the butterscotch pudding mix, I substituted Pumpkin spice, I think it added a little extra to the rolls that we loved! Enjoy!

We made our annual trek to the Pumpkin Farm yesterday. I say 'farm' because that is exactly what it is, it's not merely a 'patch', Although it didn't seem like they had as many pumpkins planted this year as the past years, they still had 2 huge fields of every shape and size of pumpkin that you can imagine. The farm is very Mom-and-Pop, very farmish, (is that a word?!) and quite primitive for this not-so-primitive girl. The only thing that is not so primitive is their entrance fee. I considered pointing out the irony in that to them but then decided not to.
They do have lots of things set up for the kids to enjoy, 2 huge slides and lots of animals. We took a hay ride down to the pumpkin fields and corn maze which is why is looks like we are in the middle of no where, we were! The sky was the the most beautiful shade of blue, so of course I tried to incorporate it as much as possible into my pictures. All in all, it was a fun day and they kids really enjoyed themselves and it wasn't too hot like last year so I remained headache-free, Yeah! :)
